"Top 5" now more fruitful – SEO Implications

An interesting study has been released from Microsoft Corporation in recent days.

The study has been logging trends amongst search engine users, logging how they search and when they choose to click.

The main conclusion of the study is that the “Top 5″ has replaced the “Top 10″ as the portion of the results in which you will need to be to gain a good Click Through Rate (CTR).

This means that, for a given search phrase, users are tending to click on one of the sites dumped within the first 5 results for the phrase. One reason for this is that the top 5 will be displayed at the top of the browser page, and further results will mean making the effort to scroll down the search results webpage. But given that until recently the “top 10″ was the niche goal for site listings, then these findings are also a reflection of the relevance of the results now being returned by the major search engines.

Whichever philosophy you believe is the reason for why users click on the first results given, the underlying implications are that you will need to stay on top of your competitors via a good, natural, SEO Campaign, if you want to be returned in the “top 5″.

Just Search are specialists in ethical Search Engine Optimisation techniques, try a Google search for search engine optimisation, and you will find us up there in that “top 5″.
