Yahoo! celebrated its 14th birthday yesterday. To celebrate the 14 years of Yahoo! they decided to take a trip down memory lane by commenting on current affairs from 1995 when they were first founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo. Nicki Dugan, the author of Yahoo!’s birthday article commented that in 1995 Java was still a cup of coffee and Email was something for computer science geeks.
The article then went on to talk about how fax machines were the fastest and most efficient way of communicating; how news was only in paper format – no rss feeds or newsletters back then. It also described how connecting to the internet seemed a daunting task, resulting in crazy sounds and random disconnects.
The 14 year history was a reminder of how Yahoo! has changed over the years. In fact, Greg Sterling wrote an article based on Yahoo!’s future last year and joked that there was a chance the company wouldn’t pull through to their 14th birthday, so there was a lot to celebrate.
Yahoo! finished up their birthday blog article with a set of pictures showing the original business plan that was written six months after their founding. Pictures also include the original headquarters of Yahoo! and the first interface that Yahoo! used for their homepage. This is proof that the information technology industry is truly a fast paced industry.
