The “spam king” fined 700 million dollars for hacking into Facebook
Facebook has just received 700 million dollars in a lawsuit which is going to be a strong message for anyone who indulges in sending out junk mail. Facebook was awarded the sum in damages in a case filed against Sanford Wallace. Wallace is a well-known figure in the online world and is known as the “spam king”.
The federal court has recently asked the “spam king” Wallace to pay up this amount because of the disturbance he caused to Facebook, wherein he gained unauthorised access to hundreds of Facebook accounts. He has been held guilty of sending out junk messages to many of them and hence, has been asked to cough up this huge sum.
Facebook has expressed satisfaction at this ruling and Sam O’Rourke, who is a member of their legal team, stated that even though Facebook was not likely to receive much of the awarded figure, such a ruling will definitely act as a deterrent for a lot of criminals who indulge in mass spamming.
The judge has also referred the “spam king” to the US attorney’s office which means that he could face a prison sentence too.
