Microsoft provides another lease of life to Windows XP; it can continue being sold till June 2010

In a new development, Microsoft has provided another lease of life to Windows XP just days before PC makers would stop selling it. Windows XP was to reach its end of life on 30th June. However, Microsoft has now stated it can continue being sold till June 2010 but merely on cheap desktops.

This decision or turnabout follows one made in April that involved extending the life of XP on cheaper laptops again until the same date. It comes as HP, Lenovo and Dell exploit loopholes in the firm’s licensing terms to keep placing XP on machines.

In an announcement made at the Computex trade show in Taiwan, Microsoft stated the decision was largely prompted by customers suggesting for the Windows XP software to be put on low cost desktops.

Industry experts feel that the decision is also partly motivated by the fact that low cost desktops cannot run Windows Vista, the latest version of the operating system.
