The news surrounding Twitter trends in 2009
There is special news for the readers who have been pointing out at Guardian for writing too much about twitter. The top Twitter trends of 2009 are on its way to being published.
Apart from being a social networking site, Twitter also played a vital role in many big news stories this year. Think about the furore surrounding Jan Moir’s column on Stephen Gateley, the election held in Iran or the storm about the Guardian being silenced from reporting questions on Trafigura in parliament.
Twitter does not directly indicate what is being talked about, either on the web or in the real world. But Paul Bradshaw very rightly pointed that the media and journalism in general have never been directly represented. These two are very important in high-lighting new developments and sometimes intervening in them. This also means entertaining us.
Abdur Chowdhury of Twitter stated in his blog that, in the current year, Twitter’s trending topics have helped us in knowing what was happening around the world, showing that public all over can be united during important events. Twitter users found the Iranian elections the most engaging topic of the year. The terms Iran, Tehran and Iran elections were all in the top 21 of Trending Topics and Iran election finished second on the favourites. Other important news topics were Gaza, Obama’s inauguration and swine flu.
