Google Options for Search Results

Google have added some more options for search which allow you sort your search results. When a query is entered, additional options are now available. To access these additional search refinements click on the show options link that appears above the search results returned.

This will open a panel of options that allow you to reorder the search results according to when they were indexed; it is particularly useful when you only want to see the latest results, or narrow your results to a particular period in time. Related searches have also been added.

The wonder wheel shows the related search terms. Clicking on any of these terms will show the terms related to these key phrases.

The timeline views sources relating to the search as a histogram. Obviously the documents could not have been indexed before Google was founded – only ten years ago. Rather, this refers to results in a news archive.

While no information can be found on Google’s help forum regarding what the timeline view actually represents, my guess is that it records the frequency of documents connected with your search query which was published on a particular date. Looking at the results in detail shows that they have been sourced from the New York Times.

Highlighting a section of the timeline allows you to narrow the time range of your query even further.
